Intensive moves in UNSC for dispatching observers to West Bank
Palestine-Israel, Politics, 12/7/2000

The UN Security Council held a session of consultations to discuss and evaluate a draft resolution presented by the Non-Alignment Movement (NAM),calling for dispatching a UN observer force to the Palestinian lands to monitor and protect Palestinian citizens.

The NAM group held a meeting on Wednesday to agree upon a strategy for a drive inside the council and also the UN General Assembly should the US vote against the draft resolution.

Egypt's permanent delegate to the UN Ahmed Abul Gheit said the Movement fully supports the Arab and Palestinian demands but the deliberations held so far by the UNSC and consultations by UN Secretary General Kofi Annan have failed to come up with a final agreement on an acceptable formula that could be approved by the Council members.

Nevertheless the Palestinians are determined to proceed with their efforts aiming at realizing their demands, he added.

"The Arab group led by Egypt will seek to rend those efforts a success despite Washington's sharp opposition," said Egypt's permanent delegate to the UN Ahmed Abul Gheit.

"The issue of providing protection for Palestinians has been a focus of attention for the UN members especially in the light of the continued killing by Israeli forces and settlers of innocent Palestinians," he said.

The draft resolution being debated by the Council includes various items foremost is the deployment of an unarmed military observer force in the occupied Palestinian territories to guarantee security and safety for the Palestinian people for a six-month period.
