Official: Morocco's enemies are inside the country
Morocco, Politics, 12/7/2000

Moroccan minister of territory development, town planning, housing and environment, Mohamed El Yazghi, said enemies of Morocco, of its security, of its stability and sacred institutions are mainly inside Morocco and enjoy foreign support.

El Yazghi who was quoted by London-based daily "Al Quds Al Arabi" explained that some countries of the region are seeking to weaken Morocco and are mobilizing journalists in France and Morocco to wage an anti-Morocco campaign.

The minister, who is also assistant first secretary of the prime minister's Socialist Union of Popular Forces (USFP), was guest to an encounter held in Rabat by the association of Arab journalists accredited in Morocco to comment on a document published by "Le Journal" weekly that charges the Moroccan left of plotting to topple king Hassan II in 1972. The government decided to ban the weekly, together with "Assahifa" -owned by the same group- and "Demain" weekly which run comments on the letter.

The minister challenged the date of the letter and stressed that its publication is a political act part of open attacks by some circles which oppose the alternation Morocco has been experiencing since 1998. These circles are threatened in their interests and privileges, he went on.

According to El Yazghi, Mohamed Basri, a leftist leader, and author of the said letter, has sided with opponents to democracy and is coordinating and meeting some persons from these circles.

Regarding the decision to ban the three publications, he noted that the issue which run the letter was not seized to give the public opinion the opportunity to realize the extent of the plot against the country.

Asked on some USFP members' request to dismiss Mohamed Basri from the USFP congress preparatory committee, he said the party's appropriate bodies will rule on this.
