Al-Assad closes the file of the Lebanese prisoners
Syria-Lebanon, Politics, 12/7/2000

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad on Wednesday closed the file of the Lebanese prisoners by handing all Lebanese prisoners held in Syria to the Lebanese authorities.

He informed this decision to the Lebanese President Emil Lahoud. For its part, the Lebanese cabinet formed a security- judicial committee with the task of receiving the prisoners in the few coming days in order to determine the legal status for each of them.

Lebanese political circles considered this initiative taken by President al- Assad as very important for three main reason: The first that this new measures would close a file which is keeping it open does not serve Lebanese- Syrian relations as it is used by certain sides to doubt these relations. The second thing is that this Syrian initiative would strengthen calls for dialogues and that the third is that the Syrian leadership has translated through this initiative what it usually asserted especially recently in that relations between Syria and Lebanon are relations state to state, in the first place.

Meanwhile news reports in Beirut that Lebanese speaker of Parliament Nabih Berri will visit Damascus within the few coming hours and more expectedly today.
