Sudan and the Inter- Parliamentary Union
Sudan, Politics, 12/7/2000
The chairman of the Sudanese elections commission Abdul Menem al-Zein Nahas has stressed that the International parliamentary Federation has promised to lift freezing Sudan's membership, immediately after the election of the new national council during this month.
In a statement to the Sudanese daily al-Sahafah issued on Wednesday al-Nahas added that the Inter-parliamentary Union informed Sudan its determination to send a delegation to make sure of complete measures for the Sudanese parliamentary elections. He added that the UN apologized for monitoring the elections and stressed that Sudan enjoys full sovereignty and that the UN observes elections in the countries of wars and conflicts and that the organization of the Islamic Conference OIC, for its part, apologized for not having enough cadres and possibilities for monitoring, noting that the UN also had the same apology for the state of Niger.
However, a delegation representing the African Unity Organization arrived on Tuesday in al-Khartoum to take part in monitoring the elections besides several representatives for the world news agencies.
The delegation of the Arab league is expected to reach al-Khartoum within the few coming days to take part in monitoring the elections which will start on December 11.
