Jordan returns Israeli Toxic Wastes
Jordan-Israel, Economics, 12/6/2000
The last truck of nine others loaded with Israeli chemical wastes will reportedly return to Israel on Wednesday or Thursday at the latest.
Kuwaiti news agency KUNA quoted Al-dustour and al-Arab al-Youm newspapers as saying "eight trucks loaded with wastes and toxic chemical materials have returned to Israel, one is parked at Al-Sheikh Hassan check point on the Jordanian side of the borders awaiting the Israeli clearance."
Jordanian customs department chief haled Al-Wazni said "laboratory tests showed that the shipments were about basic materials used to manufacture creams and they had expired long time ago, posing a threat to humans and to environment."
The 150-ton wastes were discovered last week although they were inside Jordan territories for 40 days, triggering nationwide dismay and even calls by the opposition parties for scrapping the peace treaty with the Jewish state. The parties also called for investigating the wastes' entry.
