Midaoui blames renewed immigration outbreak on Europe
Regional-European Union, Politics, 12/6/2000

Interior minister Mohamed El Midaoui blamed the renewed outbreak of illegal immigration on European countries which have extravagant visa requirements.

At question-time Tuesday, Midaoui told the chamber of Advisors all parties, the European one especially, deal in a classic and obsolete manner with the phenomenon insisting the fight against illegal immigration should drop the security approach for economic and social development of national economy.

He underscored the fact that some European parties are involved in the flow and exploit Moroccan labor saying illegal immigration was not a Moroccan monopoly but a general phenomenon.

The minister recalled how the kingdom exerted tremendous efforts mobilizing helicopters, surveillance airplanes and 100,000 servicemen to monitor Moroccan coasts. The prime minister set up a commission to probe the issue and work out a strategy to fight illegal immigration, he added.
