Benaissa says no pressure on Morocco for Mid-East stand
Morocco-Israel, Politics, 12/6/2000
Morocco's Minister of foreign affairs and cooperation Mohamed Benaissa said there were no pressures on Morocco for a "softer tone" against Israel adding the kingdom, an independent and sovereign country, would not accept pressures, whatever the origin.
In a statement to Egyptian independent weekly Al Ousboue, Benaissa said Morocco spared no effort to promote a fair and comprehensive peace as a strategic choice for the whole Arab nation. when Israel renounced commitments and resumed aggressions against the Palestinian people, Morocco was among the first ones to denounce these practices and closed down the liaison bureaus in Rabat and Tel Aviv, he went on to say.
He termed as ridicule the statements alleging the United States would have exerted pressures on Morocco to adopt a lower-tone vis-a-vis Israel. Morocco, he said, "is a sovereign country that has never received orders from any one and when it makes a decision, it does not seek advice from anyone."
"We make our decisions in all independence and in line with our convictions and interests.our policy is an integral part of the Arab struggle," Benaissa said, surveying Morocco's efforts and initiatives to uphold the Palestinian cause and defend the holy city of Al-Quds (Jerusalem).
Touching on the United States' biased stands, Benaissa said the US administration should realize that its partiality does not serve the interests of Arabs nor those of Israel and the United States, especially as Washington does have economic and strategic interests in the region.
