An official at the US state department has asserted news broadcast by the NBC TV on that the Jordanian authorities had arrested an American of Palestinian origin suspected to be involved in the explosion of the US warship "USS Cole" which resulted in killing 17 mariners in October in Yemen.

News reports quoted the said US official as saying that a representative for the US consulate in Amman visited the detained " Raed Hijazi but he refused to give more information about the arrested person."

Earlier, NBC TV said that Hijazi who is a Jordanian of Palestinian origin and carried the American nationality was arrested in November in Damascus and then the Syrian authorities handed him to Jordan, where he was sentenced to death in absentia at charges of preparing for aggressions against American and Israeli targets during celebrations of the Third Millennium.

Worthy mentioning that the Islamic Monitor Center which is stationed in London announced on Sunday that Syria had handed over Jordan the Islamic activist Hijazi who is sentenced to death in absentia under the charges of striking western goals and for having links with the billionaire Islamist who is wanted by Washington Osama Bin Laden. The center indicated that Hijazi is one of the 8 Islamists who were sentenced to death in Absentia by the Jordanian state security court on September 18, 2000.
