Killing of moroccan man sparks controversy among Spanish political milieus
Morocco-Spain, Local, 12/5/2000
All Spanish political parties represented in the parliament, trade unions and non governmental organization have expressed indignation over the case of a young Moroccan shot dead Sunday early in the morning by a Spanish security agent in a beach in Tarifa (southern Spain).
In addition to condemning the behavior of the civil guard and calling the government to explain before the parliament circumstances in which the man was killed, weapons use by civil guards when persecuting illegal immigrants was questioned.
"Those are not delinquents," said trade unions while parliamentary groups called the government to inform society on the sad accident.
Home minister, jaime Mayor Oreja, pledged that his department will open a judiciary investigation on the causes of the young man's death.
The Andalusian ombudsman argued that the "sad accident" should be used to open a debate on illegal immigration and called for settling the legal situation of all illegal immigrants.
