Syria and media pluralism
Syria, Politics, 12/5/2000

The Jordanian weekly al-Hilal said in its today's issue that the Syrian leadership has formed a committee chaired by the deputy prime minister Muhammad Naji al Otari to study amendment of the of the printing and press law in Syria which was drawn in 1949 and amended in 1952 and was suspended to be active after the launching of the march 8 revolution in 1963.

According to observers in damascus the paper considered that the licensing decision for the parties to issue private papers opens the door wide before media pluralism which will lead to political pluralism that might be preceded by abrogating the emergency law which had for long years restricted the political and media freedom in Syria.

The paper added in a report from Damascus that the accelerated internal openness decisions in Syria especially on the political and media levels aims at strengthening the internal front to meet the requirements of the coming phase at the regional and international levels.

The paper expected according to Syrian party sources that are not licensed yet that the media pluralism decision will be an entrance for political pluralism according to which these unlicensed parties will be permitted, including the Syrian national Socialist Party and others.
