On Jordanian detainees

The Jordanian charge de affairs in Damascus said in an exclusive statement to the Jordanian daily al-Dostour issued on Monday that he had submitted a request to the Syrian authorities to get lists of names of prisoners who were recently released according to the Presidential Amnesty.

Ahmad al-Muflih said that the Jordanian embassy wants to get the names of those who were released to make sure that there are Jordanians among them. He indicated that there is contradiction in the number of Jordanians detained in Syria between the Syrian and Jordanian governments, and that certain Jordanian families think that their children or relatives are held in the Syrian jails, the Syrian side explained that many of the requested names do not exist in these Syrian prisons.

The Jordanian charge de affairs said that the Syrian side is persistent that the Jordanian prisoners in the Syrian jails committed crimes inside the Syrian territories. A matter which means that they are they are not political prisoners nor detainees of opinion and therefore they are subjected to the Syrian civil criminal law. On this ground, the Jordanians are hopeful that these prisoners will be governed by the new presidential pardoning which had covered those who committed several criminal and civilians crimes.

Al-Muflih expressed his hope that the firm relations between the two sisterly states which have recently witnessed a positive development, under the leadership of the two leaders King Abdullah II and President Bashar al-Assad, will contribute to releasing the Jordanian detainees.
