Al-Assad confers with Libya's al-Tureiki
Syria-Libya, Politics, 12/4/2000

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad on Sunday at received the secretary of the Libyan people's general committee for African unity Ali Abdul Salaam al-Tureiki.

Talks dealt with the conditions and developments in the region, inter-Arab relations to encounter conditions emerging from the continued Israeli aggressions against the Palestinian people.

Talks also dealt with Syrian- Libyan relations. Al-Tureiki expressed happiness to visit Syria and to have met with President Bashar al-Assad.

In statements to the press following his meeting with President Bashar al-Assad, al-Tureiki stressed Libya's backing to Syria. He added that during the talks discussions dealt with finding out mean to back the Palestinian Intifada and the steadfastness of the Palestinian people against the Israeli occupation.

He also stressed the importance of the Syrian- Libyan meeting in backing joint Arab issues and bilateral matters. He called for a united Arab stand against the acts of extermination carried out by the Israeli forces and for a pan- Arab boycott of Israel and those who back it.

Replying a question on Libya's attending of the Euro-Mediterranean partnership agreement which was held in Marseilles despite the fact that Syria and Lebanon had boycotted it, al-Tureiki added that " Libya had only participated as a guest and did not take part in the meetings and discussions took part in it."
