Syria and redeployment in Lebanon
Lebanon-Syria, Politics, 12/4/2000

Well-informed sources in Damascus told the Monte Carlo correspondent in Damascus that there is no Syrian integrated plan for the redeployment of the Syrian forces in Lebanon and the withdrawal of these forces.

The sources commented on news that were rumored on Saturday on that some 45 Syrian military vehicles loaded with soldiers and weapons moved from Beirut to the Bekaa, saying that this move was because of operational reasons, and not linked to an integrated plan for redeployment, noting that this will be made in coordination between the Syrian and Lebanese leaderships.

The sources considered the move of the Syrian forces as usually comes as a result of certain cases that necessitate the change in the Syrian position or replacing them with other elements or keeping full readiness. Operations which are difficult to be made in certain positions where the Syrian forces do exist, due to their closeness from cities.

The sources noted the need of making a clear cut between the moves of the Syrian forces in Lebanon from the demands raised by certain Lebanese sides for the pullout of the Syrian army from Lebanon.

News reports had stated that the Syrian forces have started to dismantle its positions in Beirut and certain Lebanese cities since September.
