A Syrian- Lebanese summit expected
Lebanon-Syria, Politics, 12/2/2000
The Kuwaiti daily al-Qabas quoted well-informed political sources that they do not rule out a Syrian- Lebanese summit to be convened to raise the level of coordination between the two sides in lights of developments taking place in Israel.
The sources stressed that the Lebanese government received advise from western capitals to maintain control in the situation in South Lebanon because possibilities imply strong dangers.
The sources added that consultations were held to this effect between Beirut and Damascus but without knowing that these consultations have resulted in an understanding on Hizbullah's halting of operations against the Israeli positions in Shebaa farms at the meantime, because of the critical situation inside Israel at this phase and the possibility that Barak will carry out a military act similar to that carried out by Shimon Peres in April 1996, when, he ( Peres) for electoral purposes carried out the " Grapes of wrath " operations in which the famous Qana massacres executed. Peres's military operation in South Lebanon ended with the April Understanding which was used as a mechanism to control the battlefield until the Israeli withdrawal was maintained from South Lebanon in May 2000.
