Morocco-European Union, Politics, 12/1/2000
A friendship group between the European parliament and the Moroccan parliament has been set up to consolidate ties and promote exchanges between the two institutions.
A ceremony took place Wednesday evening in Brussels, in the presence of several Euro-mps and a Moroccan parliamentary delegation led by speaker of the House of Representatives (lower House), Abdelouhaed Radi.
The friendship group is chaired on the European side by vice-chairwoman of the foreign affairs committee, Catherine Lalumiere from the European Socialist Party and member of the committee Philippe Morillon from the European Popular Party.
The setting up of the group reflects the importance of relations existing between the two sides, the European chairmen of the group said calling for the consolidation of these relations during the current legislature that ends in July 2004.
Radi who surveyed the ongoing evolution in Morocco mainly in the rule of law consolidation stressed the need to promote more enhanced relations between Morocco and the European Union.
He stated further that the European Parliament must get informed about the evolution of the issue of Morocco's territorial integrity and renewed Morocco's attachment to international legality.
Moroccan ambassador to the European communities, Aicha Belarbi, deemed the setting up of the parliamentary group as an encouraging start and hailed the commitment of the European Socialist Party Mps in favor of the problems of the south Mediterranean.
The group will hold its coming meeting in Rabat.
