Al-Shara, Lebanese counterpart talk on the telephone
Syria-Lebanon, Politics, 11/30/2000

A telephone call wad held on Wednesday between the Syrian foreign minister Farouk al-Shara and his Lebanese counterpart Mahmoud Hammoud.

The two ministers discussed latest developments in the region and on the forthcoming meeting of the Arab Summit follow up committee which Syria is scheduled to host at the level of foreign ministers in the mid of the holy month of Ramadan.

Meantime, al-Shara has called on the UN Security Council and the International community to shoulder the responsibility of establishing a just and comprehensive Middle East peace, based on the implementation of UN resolutions which provide for Israel's pullout of the Syrian Golan to the June 4th 1967 lines and of the rest of the Lebanese territories including Shebaa farms to the internationally- recognized borders so as to guarantee the legitimate rights of the Palestinian Arab people.

The message advocated by al-Shara was stated in a message sent on Syria's behalf on Wednesday to the head of the committee in charge of exercising the inalienable rights of the Palestinians to mark the International day of Solidarity with the Palestinian people. He made it clear that the Palestinians people did not surrender to occupation, refused the Israeli conditions in peace negotiations, launched the two- month old valiant uprising with a view to imposing sovereignty on their national decision, to establishing an independent state with Jerusalem as its capital and to exercising the right to return in compliance with the UN resolutions and the International Law. The message stressed that Syria will continue to defend the just cause of Palestine and the legitimate rights of the Palestinians.

Al-Shara also indicated to the gross violations of human rights the Syrians in the Golan are subject to, stressing they are struggling bravely to eliminate the Israeli occupation.

He pointed out that Israel is responsible for the undermining of the peace process because it still refused to implement security Council resolutions 242 and 338, and had denied obligations concluded during pain- taking negotiations that lasted for many years.

He called on the UN Security Council and the international community to accord a special attention to the grave dangers of the situation in the Middle east as a result of the Israeli practices which have brought the region back to the climate of tension and violence.

Al-Shara said: " Israel continued to ignore resolutions of the UN, to violate the international charters, especially the 1949 Fourth Geneva Convention connected with the protection of civilians at times of war and the 1977 supplement and to threaten Syria and Lebanon."
