Al-Bashir and conditions in Sudan
Sudan, Politics, 11/30/2000
The Sudanese President Omar Hassan al-Bashir has held the leader of the opposition democratic national coalition Muhammad Othman al- Merghani responsible for the recent attack against the city of kasla. He said that Merghani is directly responsible for these incidents even if he ( Merghani) made statements condemning these incidents.
Al-Bashir added in statements he made at the headquarters of the national congress on Tuesday evening and issued by the Sudanese dailies on Wednesday that any military act made in the framework of the opposition coalition falls under the responsibility of its leader, viewing statements made by Merghani on the attack as " weak."
Al- Bashir said that these events might affect future negotiations with the opposition coalition, adding if there will be meeting it will be made within the framework of the joint Libyan- Egyptian initiative or IGAD's initiative, and he stressed that the opposition is not serious to reaching a comprehensive political solution.
On what stated by Suzan Rice, the US under secretary of State in accusing Sudan of practicing slavery in the South, President said that Sudan has submitted a complaint to the UN Security Council about this violations and Rice's coming to South Sudan without the permission of the government. He said that the Sudanese government is ready to take other extra measures in addition to those taken to preventing the American diplomats from entering Sudan and stop issuing visas for them.
Al-Bashir, on the other hand, denied the existence of any agreement on partitioning ministerial posts between the government and the al-Ummah ( nation) party led by al-Sadeq al-Mahdi. he explained: " no talks has been so far made with the Ummah party on dividing ministerial posts. However, there is a meeting for discussions on main issues concerning peace and war," noting after the agreements the door will be opened for participation by the parties including al-Ummah party.
President al-Bashir also noted the failure of all efforts exerted by certain African states on the government s meeting with the rebellion movement led by John Garang. He said that Garang is not serious in the dialogue.
