Egypt urges int'1 community to interfere to protect Palestinians
Egypt-Palestine, Politics, 11/29/2000
The UN general assembly discussed enhancement and coordination of humanitarian relief and aid provided by the united nations (UN).
Egypt's permanent delegate to the UN ambassador Ahmad Abul Gheit said that Egypt's statement mainly focused on exhorting the international community to provide aid for the Palestinian people and protect them against Israeli military aggressions taking place for about two months now.
"The Middle East peace process is subjected everyday to grave risks and the international community should not stand idle over Israeli military operations," he said.
Egypt, in its speech, expressed regret over the serious relapse of the peace process and called on the international community to reiterate commitment to continuity of this process via extending a clear-cut message to Israel that it has to respect Palestinians' human rights.
"Egypt underscored international protection for the Palestinian people who are addressing the world conscience to be just and not to pursue double-standard policies," said Abul Gheit.
He pointed out that Egypt voiced appreciation for all the UN agencies that are soundly contributing to upgrading the level of services and institutional capabilities of the Palestinian authority.
Egypt has demanded all donor countries to meet their commitments in the field of provision of assistance to the Palestinian people who want to enjoy their basic rights, including its indispensable right to lead a decent free life within security and safety like any other people in the world.
Abul Gheit pointed out that Egypt calls on all parties to armed disputes to respect all rights of workers in the field of humanitarian relief and to guarantee their safety and security, stressing that the hazards those workers are subjected to represent serious violations of the international law.
"Egypt requested that legal access would be allowed for the UN workers to reach the civilian men, women and children who are in need of assistance, by obtaining prior permission from the host countries out of respect for their national sovereignty," said Abul Gheit.
He said that Egypt considers the main role in providing humanitarian relief and protection for those citizens, is the responsibility of their governments, noting the role of the international community is confined to provision of relief when a government asks for it.
Considering the sensitivity of this issue, Egypt received with relief statements by the UN secretary-general's envoy for refugees affairs that he intends to continue efforts to get abreast of countries' views in this respect.
