The discovery of metal coins dating back to the Byzantine age

A team of French archeologists headed by Jean Ampiro, discovered several coins and fragments of pottery and icons during their excavations at Fouad Street in the center of Alexandria city, in an area, belonging to the to the Greek Patriarchate.
The excavation works unveiled at twelve metre depth, a well, passages and walls dating back to the Byzantine age. The mission, as well, continued diving at the deep sea area in the vicinity of Qayet Bai citadel region to search for submerged antiquities, and in an attempt to determine the location of the Old Alexandria lighthouse by means of the most up to date scientific techniques.
A team of French journalists were at the scene to witness this new achievement.
