Israeli envoy in India to justify Israeli policy against the Palestinians
Israel-India, Politics, 11/17/2000
The Israeli government has delegated the deputy director general for the Israeli foreign ministry Zefi Ghabai to India in an attempt to justify its acts in the Palestinian territories at the officials of the Indian government. This is following the stances expressed by the Indian press and the public opinion in pressing the government in the country to take a tough position towards what is seen as Israeli barbarous practices.
However, the Indian media had strongly denounced the Israeli practices upon covering news and developments of al-Aqsa Intifada, and as the main Indian cities witnessed large demonstrations demanding India take firm stances towards this matter. This pushed the Israeli ambassador in New Delhi to meet with the leader of the Indian ruling people's party to express his government's regret over the Indian stances in condemning the Israeli acts against the Palestinian people.
Observers in India expect sessions of the Indian parliament which will start next week to witness " heated debates " over the Indian foreign policy especially towards issues relating to the Arab- Israeli conflict that call on the Indian government to take a clear position towards what is taking place in the region and not to keep silence, in light of the relations linking New Delhi to the Arab states.
