Peace only secures US interests in ME
Regional-USA, Politics, 11/16/2000
US interests in the Middle East and the Islamic world are attainable only through its endeavours for peace, not through the demonstration of its military might which is based on tactical stances," Nabil Fahmy said.
In his address to a congregation in Washington late Tuesday, Egypt's Ambassador to the US, Nabil Fahmy said the UN Security Council resolution 242 which is accepted by Israel marks the ideal formula and compromise for a settlement between the Palestinians and the Israelis.
"The rescue of the almost dead peace process requires daring ideas based on the international law and the legitimate rights and simultaneously takes into account the deep concerns of the involved parties," said Fahmy in his address entitled "Egypt and the UN".
"A permanent peace should be based on the balance of interests, not on the military considerations," said Fahmy.
"Oslo agreements aimed primarily at reaching an end similar to that brought by the Peace Treaty signed by Egypt and Israel," said Fahmy.
"The UN has to shoulder its moral responsibility which dictates, and involvement in the peace process as the international organization provides the proper ground for this process and its conventions mark the cornerstone of inter-states relations," added Fahmy.
"One of the priorities Egypt is addressing is the challenge of the armament policies in the Middle East, especially the weapons of mass destruction," said Fahmy.
"Egypt's keenness to follow up to this issue dates back to the UN General Assembly Session in 1974 when it submitted a draft demanding nuclear disarmament in the Middle East," he recalled.
Fahmy also highlighted the importance that the UN undertakes its due role in handling the environmental problems such as global warming, economic crises, and deadly diseases such as AIDS.
