Egypt urges more effective role in ME peacemaking
Egypt-Regional, Politics, 11/16/2000
Egypt's Foreign Minister Amr Moussa Wednesday evening asserted the importance of the Euro-Mediterranean meeting to restore balance in the Middle East peace process.
In remarks he made upon arrival in the French town of Marseilles, he added that restoring balance in the peace process could be brought about through serious discussion, not through boycott.
"The current situation of the Middle East peace process would be discussed during the conference," said Moussa.
He urged Europe to play a more effective role in the peacemaking but getting seriously engaged in how to strike a balance in the regional peace process.
Moussa cited contentious issues between Arabs and some European countries. However, he pointed to common interests, which he urged should be maintained.
"We want to restore the European role to the peace process. The European-Mediterranean conference will discuss several economic issues. But what matters most is the political side and the Palestinian situation," added Moussa.
The Egyptian official urged frank debate and agreeing on a certain line. He noted that the failure to reach an agreement on many issues during previous meetings produced "a lot of deterioration".
He called for serious and candid discussions to forge a Mediterranean policy to support the Middle East peace process.
Moussa said that the agreement of France, the current President of the European Union, to hold a special meeting to the Middle East peace process and the situation in the Palestinian land, reflected Euro-Mediterranean interest.
