Laayoun hosts new cities association forum next week
Morocco, Local, 11/16/2000

The works of the New-cities Association forum will open in Laayoun next week with delegates from 23 countries attending.

This international event will help participants find out about the Moroccan experiment in urbanism, housing and construction, minister of city-planning, environment, urbanism and housing Mohamed El Yazghi said.

Chairing a meeting in Laayoun Wednesday on Laayoun-city and Laayoun harbor city urbanism master plan, the minister said interesting experiments have been conducted successfully in other countries where new cities were built in areas suffering from adverse climatic conditions turning them into development hubs through socio-economic promotion.

The southern city of Laayoun which has recorded great progress in the last few years has still to come to grips with challenges of desert-creeping, pollution and sanitation, he said.
