International colloquy on al-Quds calls for urgent protection of Palestinian people
Regional-Palestine, Politics, 11/16/2000

The international colloquy on the holy city of Al-Quds (Jerusalem) held in Fez, some 200 Km north-east of Rabat, Nov. 13-15, called for an "urgent protection of the Palestinian people who are prey to Israel's bloody aggressions," MAP reported.

The colloquy that debated the religious, civilizational and historical dimension of the city called for the implementation of the UN resolutions on the Palestinian-Israeli conflict to reach a fair, lasting solution in Palestine. It urged Arab and Islamic countries to ask the UN General Assembly to request the opinion of the Hague International Court of Justice on the deadlines for implementing the UN resolutions on the Palestinian-Israeli conflict adopted in 1947, on the Palestinian territories occupied in 1967, including Al-Quds, and on the juridical situation of the UN member countries which maintain relations with Tel Aviv despite its blatant violations of international law.

The colloquy under the topic "Al-Quds now, the city, the people, permanent challenges" called Arab and Islamic summits institutions to spare no effort to convince the international public opinion to firmly oppose Israel's attempts to Judaize the holy city, obliterate its identity and deteriorate its heritage.

Participants, who denounced "the barbarous and inhuman aggressions perpetrated by the Zionists against the Palestinian people," called all Arab and Islamic countries to severe relations with Israel, to consider the recognition of the Arab character of Al-Quds as a key issue and main principle for relations with other countries and to insist on Arab sovereignty over Al-Quds.

Arab and Islamic countries were equally called to extend further political and financial backing to the Palestinian resistance in Al-Quds and other occupied territories, to support educational and health projects in the city, and to back moves geared towards the protection of the city heritage.

The union of Arab architects and the associations of Arab and Moroccan architects were called to cooperate with their Palestinian peers to draft plans countering the Israeli plans in Al-Quds and the occupied territories.

The colloquy, held under the aegis of King Mohammed VI, chairman of the Al-Quds committee, was sponsored by the ministry of culture and communication in cooperation with the Arab architects union.
