Hamas leader Mashaal and the Islamic summit
Palestine-Jordan, Politics, 11/16/2000

The chairman of the political bureau of the Islamic resistance movement "Hamas" Khaled Mashaal has denied to have indulged himself into the Islamic summit through his meeting with the chairman of the Palestinian President Yasser Arafat to steal the lime-lights.

In an exclusive statement to the London- based al- Hayat daily issued on Wednesday, Mashaal added that the atmosphere of the conference has prepared the proper venue for his meeting with Arafat, his first meeting with Arafat since 1995. He continued that what has been said that he ( Mashaal) had asked the Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh to arrange this meeting was groundless, adding the meeting came as a good initiative from the Yemeni President and the " response was from me and from Arafat."

Mashaal considered that the political message of this meeting is of two parts: First that the Palestinian people are united on the ground and in the battlefield in confrontation of the Zionist aggression and second that " we in Hamas are ready for any unionist effort, that are on the ground of continuing the uprising and resisting the occupation."

On the other hand Mashaal refused to confirm or deny the failure of arrangements to convene a meeting between him and Jordanian officials, on the sideline of the Islamic summit. He confined himself to saying " no comment."
