Egypt elections statement
Egypt, Politics, 11/15/2000

Egypt's Minister of Interior Habib el-Adly announced wednesday the final official results of the parliamentary elections which started on october 18 and concluded on tuesday, november 14.

In an official statement on wednesday, Adly said the NDP won 388 seats out of the total 444 seats against 37 for independents, 7 for al-Wafd party, 6 for al-Tagammu' 3 for the Nasserite and one for al-Ahrar.

For the first time in the history of Egypt, the parliamentary elections have been held over three stages under full judicial supervision in 222 constituencies, said al-adly.

Some 3,965 candidates vied for the votes of 24,602,241 eligible voters and turnout varied between 15 to 40 percent, said Minister of Interior habib el-adly.

The results showed that the NDP won 353 seats, independents who later joined the ndp won 35 seats, the purely independents garnered 37 seats, al-tagammu 6, al-wafd 7, al-ahrar one and the arab Nasserite 3.

Total winners thus make up 442 and the second constituency in Alexandria has not yet been decided after being annulled by a court ruling, said the minister.

The security authorities were too vigilant to allow certain individuals a break-off from their isolation and infiltrate into the democratic march through devious ways, said the minister.

Fair comparisons have to take into account the previous elections when thuggery, bullying and intimidations were rife and violent clashes caused the death of dozens over two days only, said Adly.

Even some civilians came to help policemen in thwarting the few attempts to intimidate the electorate, said the minister.

For the first time, the voting cards for every round of the elections have been re-designed to further assure and guarantee clean elections, he added.
