Turkey and the Islamic summit
Regional-Turkey, Politics, 11/15/2000

The Turkish daily Hurriet said on Tuesday that the Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and the Iranian President Muhammad Khatami opposed the Turkish will to mention the name of Yasser Arafat in the final statement of the Organization of the Islamic Conference OIC, and therefore Arafat's name was replaced by the leadership of the Palestine Liberation Organization.

For its part, the Turkish daily Radical said that as a result of the numerous discussions which lasted for one full day President al-Assad had left the summit.

The Turkish daily Yani Savak quoted diplomatic sources which it did not identify that Turkey was not subjected to strong criticism during the Islamic summit during its relations with Israel because of the improvement of its relations with Syria in the current phase.

For its part, the Turkish daily Joumhoreyat said the visit of the Turkish President Ahmad Nacdet Cezar to Syria and his participation at the funeral of the later President Hafez al-Assad added together for his stand at al-Doha summit an evidence on the need of the Turkish policy interests in the Middle East.

The paper said that Turkey's new policy will lead to positive results with the Arab states besides the fact that the Arab states have embarked on a new evaluation for the cause of Cyprus.
