Morocco calls Muslims to show solidarity with al-Quds inhabitants
Morocco-Regional, Politics, 11/13/2000
Morocco's King Mohammed VI on Sunday called on Muslims to show solidarity with the inhabitants of Al-Quds, Jerusalem.
"We seize the opportunity of this summit to call on Muslim consciousness to show solidarity with their brethren, the inhabitants of Al-Quds who suffer from the consequences of occupation," said King Mohammed VI in a speech read for him by his brother Prince Moulay Rachid before the 9th Islamic summit, held over the weekend in Doha, Qatar.
The king urged Muslims to contribute to the projects supervised by Beit Mal Al-Quds. "The delicate situation that Al-Quds Asharif, first kibla, third holy shrine and destination of the celestial trip of the prophet, is going through requires us to consolidate our action through a concrete material support," he said, underlining that backing to Beit Mal Al-Quds represents a token of all Muslims' solidarity and the materialization of their will to preserve the Islamic identity of the holy city.
Beit Mal Al-Quds was set up by the Al-Quds Committee in 1977 to preserve the Arab and Islamic heritage in the holy city of Jerusalem. The fund is entrusted with collecting donations and has the possibility to issue bonds in accordance with the Islamic law to finance housing, educational and infrastructure projects in Al-Quds.
King Mohammed, who described as "difficult and delicate" the situation in the Palestinian territories, deplored Israel's arrogance at a time the world is aspiring to a fair and global peace in the region.
"We, in our capacity as chairman of the Al-Quds Committee, vigorously decry and condemn these barbarous and inhumane acts," King Mohammed VI said, adding he undertook contacts with several international parties so that the international community, especially the superpowers, assume their responsibility of protecting the unarmed Palestinian people against the aggressions and the blockade they are submitted to.
King Mohammed VI also renewed unshakable will to continue backing the Palestinian people until they achieve their legitimate claims, namely the establishment of an independent state, with al-Quds Asharif as capital.
