Mauritania 's expanding desert
Mauritania, Agriculture, 11/13/2000
Desert is expanding in Mauritania despite the heavy rainfall which have been unexpected sometimes and resulted in recent years in the return back of certain kinds of plants and herbs which were eliminated due to the waves of drought along the 1970 s.
The chairman of the agricultural metrology center in Nouakchott Vandiga Yalli said the amounts of waters registered in 1999 were abundant and led to floods that destroyed parts of the crops.
The authorities in Mauritania stress that the agricultural production is increasing despite the improper environment and this is due to improving the irrigation system. However, non- official estimates expect that agricultural production would exceed 170,000 tons this year, representing a relatively higher average in comparison to the figures of last year ( 1999).
Worthy mentioning that the rain season in Mauritania started this year in August and ended in the first half of the first ten says of October.
