Report to Mubarak on Arab summit resolutions
Egypt-Regional, Politics, 11/11/2000
Arab Summit Chairman President Hosni Mubarak will receive a detailed report this week from Foreign Minister Amr Moussa and Secretary-General of Arab League (AL) Esmat Abdul Maguid. The report deals with the results of follow-up committee concerning the carrying out of the latest Arab League resolutions.
On the other hand, Amr Moussa said that the Arab follow-up committee, an offshoot of the Arab Summit, has taken a number of decisions on future Arab action in international organizations.
The committee also issued directives to Arab Ambassadors accredited to the UN New York and Geneva seats and made contacts with a host of European and other ministers.
Speaking to the Middle East News Agency (MENA) Friday, Moussa asserted that the follow-up committee has mapped out frameworks for Arab action during the Ministerial meeting of the Euro-Mediterranean partnership, due in Marseille on November 15-16, as well as the meetings of the Organization of Security and Cooperation in Europe, to be held in Vienna.
Moussa made it clear that the follow-up committee decided to meet regularly on a monthly basis. The panel's coming meeting will be held in Damascus in December and the third in Tunis.
Jordan will host the committee's fourth meeting ahead of the ordinary Arab Summit.
During the recent two-day Arab Summit, hosted by Cairo on October 21-22, Arab leaders approved a mechanism for the regular convocation of the Arab Summit.
Moussa, who chaired the meeting of the Arab follow-up committee in Doha, said discussions touched upon the current visit to the region by UN Human Rights Commissioner Mary Robinson.
"The visit comes in line with the recent resolution of the Human Rights Commission and not just an ordinary visit," said Moussa.
In talks with Robinson, the Arab side will insist on the implementation of the commission's resolution.
"We are following up Robinson's visit to Israel, her talks and their outcome," said Moussa, asserting that Israel is the occupier and must abide by the Geneva Fourth Convention and implement the resolutions of the UN and Human Rights Commission.
The two Egyptian diplomats underlined that the issue is not a matter of contacts, propaganda or media but rather how to protect the Palestinian people in light of Robinson's capacity as Human Rights Commissioner.
"She has obligations and certain duties and frameworks to implement relevant resolutions," said Moussa.
