Moroccan King message on Jerusalem to Pope John Paul II
Morocco-Vatican, Politics, 11/11/2000

Pope John Paul II on Friday received a message from Morocco's King Mohammed VI related to the Al-Quds (Jerusalem) issue and the situation in the Middle-East.

The message was handed over by Moroccan endowments and Islamic affairs minister, Abdelkebir Alaoui M'daghri, to the Vatican foreign minister, Jean-Louis Tauran.

At the meeting with Tauran, M'daghri conveyed the king's greetings to the Pope and said he was visiting the Vatican as envoy of King Mohammed VI, Commander of the Faithful and chairman of Al-Quds Committee, an off-shoot of the Organization of Islamic Conference (OIC).

M'Daghri and Tauran discussed the situation in the Middle-East, especially the carnage perpetrated by the Israeli authorities against the Palestinian people.

M'Daghri asked Tauran to convey to the Pope King Mohammed VI's solicitation to undertake initiatives with the countries of the world to foster their awareness as to the serious situation in the region and mobilize them to put an end to the carnage and the acts of violence against the Palestinian people.

Tauran said the Vatican understands these concerns regarding the situation in the Middle-East. He recalled the Vatican's position considering the Israeli occupation of Al-Quds as contrary to international legality and to the principles of international law. He likewise recalled the Vatican's call to put the holy sites under international protection.
