Sudanese president and the rebels
Sudan, Politics, 11/11/2000
The Sudanese President Omar Hassan al-Bashir has stressed that the Sudanese army will continue to fight the rebels led by John Garang until the matter is ultimately settled because the " call advocated by the government for peace and reconciliation is considered by some as a weakness."
In a statement issued by the Sudanese dailies on Friday al-Bashir added that "instructions were given to the armed forces not to stop the fighting until an end is put to the rebels."
On Thursday, the Sudanese vice President Othman Muhammad Taha visited the city of Kasla which was exposed to an attack by the rebels and was acquainted with the destruction and the acts of killing that took place in the city.
During his meeting with Kasla's citizens, Muhammad Taha stressed that the government will not hesitate to repel the rebels who seek to destabilize security and terrify citizens.
On the other hand, the Sudanese daily Akhbar al-Youm showed pictures for several bodies of rebels in the city's downtown where normal life has returned on Thursday after the end of the sudden attack in which three contingents for Garang forces took part.
