Egypt continues reform march under Mubarak's reign
Egypt, Politics, 11/9/2000
Egypt's Prime Minister Atef Ebeid Wednesday said that Egypt, in the reign of President Hosni Mubarak, continues the march of reform, including political reform.
Ebeid, who cast his vote Wednesday in the third and last stage of people's assembly 2000 elections, said that Egypt is about to witness more progress and growth.
Asked to comment on the parliamentary experiment in Egypt following the present elections, Ebeid said that the future picture will surely improve greatly and success will be on the side of those who are among the people, feel their feelings and express their needs.
Ebeid said the executive authority will reach the villages and rural areas, and at the level of the districts in cities, in order to know the economic development needs of the people.
"We shall work with the people to provide services and we shall proceed in this course in the coming three months," he said.
He said that information is compiled at every village and district in Egypt, as regards population and the economic, social and services situation.
In the light of this information, and in collaboration with the deputies to be selected by the people, we shall introduce amendments and make improvements in projects in the various villages. "Plans in the coming years will be drawn up on the basis of this information," Ebeid said.
He said that the executive authority would work hand-in-hand with representatives of the people and the legislative institution to improve social and economic conditions, beginning at the base.
Asked to evaluate the results of the first and second stages of people's assembly elections, Ebeid said that elections of the first two stages show, beyond a shadow of doubt, that the majority of the people stand on the side of stability and the center which protects all categories and does not take the side of any category at the expense of another.
"Elections have been carried out in an atmosphere of integrity and neutrality," Ebeid said.
"Egypt is the land of all. Nobody can impose his doctrinal affiliations. Egypt is making progress for the benefit of all," said Ebeid adding "It protects businessmen, workers, the consumer and producer; it protects the weak and the strong producer so that he may work and serve the weak."
Ebeid said that Egypt protects the property of the well to do because they acquired their property through legitimate means. "We should protect private ownership. All heavenly laws called on us to protect private ownership," he added.
Ebeid said that "Egypt is the country of Muslims and Christians. Muslims perform their rights in complete freedom. So do Christians. Both are part of one fabric."
"Affirmation of this orientation deepens stability which have been enjoying for 19 years in the reign of President Hosni Mubarak," Ebeid said.
