Malaysia urges Israel to stop crackdown on Palestinians
Palestine-Malaysia, Politics, 11/8/2000

Malaysia has urged Israel to stop its brutal crackdown on Palestinians in the Occupied Territories, reports Malaysian news agency BERNAMA.

Malaysia's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Hasmy Agam, said the situation would aggravate the plight of Arabs living under Israeli occupation.

"We call on Israel to cease its brutal crackdown on the Palestinian civilians," he told a special committee of the UN General Assembly in New York on Tuesday.

"Israel must realize that it cannot hope to enjoy peace for as long as it refuses a just and comprehensive settlement of the conflict on the land-for-peace principle and an independent state of Palestine."

Malaysia further called the international community to act for an end to systematic breaches of human rights in the occupied Arab territories by the Occupying Power.

"It cannot afford to be selective in its approach by criticizing human rights violation elsewhere but remain silent in respect of the occupied Arab territories," he said.

He added confidence peace cannot be built and the peace process cannot be promoted under a policy of continued repression and subjugation of the Arab population living in the occupied territories.

"The international community must take serious measures to ensure the protection of these long-suffering people living under occupation," he said.
