A Syrian committee to lift the embargo imposed on Iraq
Syria-Iraq, Politics, 11/7/2000
It was announced on Monday in Damascus the formation of the Syrian committee to lift the sanctions imposed on Iraq. The committee includes several intellectuals, men of letters and writers and university teachers and "aims at lifting the sanctions which constitutes a war of extermination against the Iraqi people of whom so far some 1.5 million died of hunger and medicine shortage."
In a press conference held on Monday at the premises of the Arab writers Union on the occasion of announcing its establishment, the committee stressed that this unprecedented siege in the history of humanity constitutes a war of annihilation against the Iraqi people, besides it constitutes a flagrant violation to international law and to the Geneva Agreements for 1949 and its protocols which state to protect civilians at times of wars and for the human rights declaration. The committee described the economic war launched against Iraq and polluting it by poisonous radiation (through depleted uranium weapons) as sort of using mass annihilation weapons.
In a statement read by its chairman Muhammad al-Atrash, the committee stressed that "destroying Iraq and imposing sanctions on it are part of a Zionist- imperialist strategy which aims at weakening the Arab states and imposing surrender solutions on it especially in the area of the Arab - Israeli conflict." The committee linked between what is taking place in Iraq and in occupied Palestine "at the hands of the Israeli terrorists."
The statement stressed that the aim behind the call for lifting the sufferings from the Iraqi people, as indicated by President Bashar al-Assad does not means to lose Kuwait, rather to win both Iraq and Kuwait as Iraq constitutes a strategic and civilization depth for the Arab states in general and for Syria, in particular.
The statement called on the Arab and Muslim states to immediately and unconditionally lift the sanctions imposed on Iraq after it has become clear that the West, especially the US embarks on a double- standard policy. It also called for resuming diplomatic relations with Iraq and maintaining pan Arab reconciliation with it.
The statement called on the Arab state to revive the Arab national security and implement the joint Arab defense treaty.
