US urged to submit constructive proposals to the peace process
Egypt, Politics, 11/4/2000

Egypt's Ambassador to the United States Nabil Fahmy called on the Arabs, Europeans and the UN to constructively contribute to the peace process on the Palestinian-Israeli track.

In a speech in Washington Thursday night, Fahmy said that this had not diminished the basic role played by United States as a sponsor of negotiations.

Fahmy urged the United States to come up with ambitious constructive proposals to bring negotiations back on track, commensurate with the international legitimacy resolutions and the Palestinian rights without any attempt to reach compromises between vice and virtue".

Stability in the Middle East will only be the product of terminating Israel's occupation of Palestinian lands usurped in 1967 in implementation of the Security Council resolutions 338 and 242, a prelude to declare an independent Palestinian state with Jerusalem as its capital, said Fahmy.

He pointed out that Egypt would resume efforts to make Mideast peace, adding the first step in this respect is to implement what was agreed upon in Sharm El-Sheikh and accelerate the work of the fact-finding commission.

Instead of suspending the peace process, it is vital that violence and clashes between the Palestinians and Israelis be halted and Israel has to stop using force against Palestinian protesters, he said.
