Funerary complexes unearthed in Egypt
Egypt, History, 11/3/2000

The archaeological team of Pennsylvania University will continue excavations on the site ot Kom Al Sultan area of Abydous archaeological site in Suhag.

According to Dr Yehia Al Massri, head of the antiquities sector of Suhag, Kom Al Sultan includes several potentially rich areas including the site where the American team is engaged. The outer wall fencing the area is so much like the wall of the complex belonging to king zoser at Saqqara. He explained that the team was excavating two sites the first of which lies within the range of the wall.

The structure within has proven to be a funerary complex so much like that of zoser. The complex is closely related to the tombs of the first and second dynasties at Om Al Qi'ab just three kilometers away.

The complex was found to belong to king Kha Shekm Way of the 2nd dynasty whose tomb also lies in Om AL Qi'ab.

The second site which lies to the east of this complex was found to embrace 12 ditches taking the shape of a boat. Pieces of cedar wood, imported from Lebanon, likely to belong to the bottom or front of a boat were unearthed:

Dr Al Masri said that kings of the first and second dynasties had a funerary complex, each having a boat buried in a ditch with sun-dried brick sides and a tomb, three kilometers away. This combination, said Al Masri was related to the ancient Egyptians' belief in immortality and resurrection. Ancient Egyptians were keen on having these boats so that the king would use his vessel in his journey between life and After-Life.
