Syria, Turkey to set up a joint irrigation company
Syria-Turkey, Economics, 11/1/2000
Well-informed economic sources told the London-based al-Hayat daily on Tuesday that Ankara and Damascus had agreed to form a joint company on irrigation and the company will be built on the border inside the Syrian lands, aiming at developing ways of irrigation in the country, in collaboration with the Turkish experts and that Damascus's share of the company's capital is 51%.
The sources expected the two sides ( the Turkish and the Syrian) to resume their talks over " declaration of principles" which organizes the future of their cooperation, dealing with basic issues like borders, security, the waters, the economy, trade cooperation and cultural relations.
The sources indicated that the two points relating to borders and the waters have obstructed reaching an agreement on principles during a visit made by a Turkish delegation to Syria in 1999. However, Turkish circles and independent experts note that the two countries are about to sign " declaration of principles."
The paper considered the visit to be held tomorrow by the Syrian vice- President Abdul Halim Khaddam to Ankara as on the highest level by a Syrian official to Turkey.
The paper added quoting diplomatic sources that the visit came in the course of diplomatic contacts aiming at preparing for a Presidential visit that will crown relations between the two sides and the signing of declaration of principles.
Meantime, a Turkish diplomatic source said on Tuesday that Syria's vice President Abdul Halim Khaddam will pay an official visit to Turkey on Thursday and Friday carrying a message from the Syrian President Bashar al-Assad to his Turkish counterpart Najdat Ceasar.
The source did not give any explanations on the content of the message but its stressed that Khaddam will also meet with the Turkish prime minister and with the speaker of parliament.
