Al-Turabi to boycott Sudanese elections
Sudan, Politics, 10/30/2000
The secretary general of the People's Congress Party in Sudan Hassan al-Turabi announced his party will boycott the presidential and parliamentary elections and the referendum over the constitution which will start in November in Sudan.
In a press conference al-Turabi said that the meeting held by the commission of the People's Congress Shoura ( his newly declared party) last Friday had unanimously refused to take part in the elections.
Al-Turabi justified his party's non- participation in the elections because of continued state of emergency and detention carried out by the state ( al-Bashir) against cadres of the people's congress and the lack of constitutional equality among the candidates especially in regard to promotion campaigns for these elections.
Worthy mentioning the Sudanese security forces had arrested several cadres of al-Turabi party following confrontations and demonstration took place in several Sudanese cities especially in the cities of Port Sudan and al-Abyad last month ( September).
