Egyptian envoy visits Libya
Libya-Egypt, Politics, 10/25/2000

Egyptian information minister Safwat El-Sharif headed yesterday to Libya to meet President Moammar al-Ghadafi but the details of the visit were not stated in Cairo, yet it is known that El-Sharif is the one authorized with the Libyan file in the Egyptian foreign policy.

It is expected that El-Sharif will convey a message from the Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak to President Ghadafi who refused to attend the last Arab summit.

The Libyan representation was limited to the delegation at the Arab league lead by Abd El- Monem El-Honi who withdrew in the evening of the first day of the summit after receiving instructions from his country to this effect.

In pre-departure statements, Sherif said he had met Gaddafi and will convey a message from him to President Mubarak.

The two messages are part of exchanged messages between the two Arab leaders which mirror their keenness on maintaining consultations over all issues of Arab concern, added the minister.

"The two messages evaluated the outcome of the two-day summit, hosted by Cairo on October 21-22, and the already distinguished bilateral relations "said Sherif.

He also highlighted the special relations between President Mubarak and Gaddafi which is based on mutual respect.

Sherif said that he reviewed with Gaddafi the issue of fixing new dates for the meeting of the Egyptian-Libyan joint higher committee.

"The meeting was scheduled to be held in mid-October but the convening of the Arab summit postponed it," said the Egyptian minister.

He was hopeful the meeting would be held following parliamentary elections in Egypt.

Minister of African Affairs Ali Abdul Salam El-Triki voiced pleasure over Sherif's visit to Tripoli carrying a message from Mubarak to Gaddafi. .

"We appreciate this nice gesture from President Mubarak and are confident that Libyan-Egyptian relations are in the safe hands of Mubarak and Gaddafi," he said.
