Jordanians project to march to borders with Palestine
Jordan-Palestine, Politics, 10/24/2000

Jordanian trade unions are projecting to hold this Tuesday a march from Amman and other cities to the border with occupied Palestine.

The government of Jordan has received requests for 185 large size buses to convey an expected 50,000 participants bound for the border between Jordan and occupied Palestine (around Al-Agwhar area close to the Dead Sea).

Several other independent organizations, universities and individuals are planning to use buses and individual cars to claim the right of return of Palestinians.

The government of Jordan was first opposed to the protest but agreed later under conditions, including the respect of the path, that no more than 45 buses be used and no individual car be allowed to join the protest.

Amman has reportedly put tanks and heavily armored soldiers along the Jordanian-Palestinian border to prevent protesters from penetrating enemy lines into occupied Palestine. Seventy five checkpoints have been setup on the way to the borders with occupied Palestine in order to filter out any people traveling in their own cars.

More than half of the 5-million-strong Jordanian population are Palestinians.
