Morocco, Economics, 10/24/2000

Morocco said Monday the state receipts will reach $ 14.99 billion (164.9 billion DH) under the 2001 appropriation bill, representing a 10 % jump compared to 2000.

Expenditures will stand at $ 15.39 billion (169.35 billion dirhams), ie. a 3.17 % increase, said economy, finance, privatization and tourism minister, Fathallah Oualalou, who was presenting the bill Monday to the house of representatives (lower house of parliament).

Wages will soak $ 4.10 billion,(45.2 billion DH). The amount is 3.11 % higher over 2000, due to the creation of 17,000 new job opportunities, executives internal promotion and transfer of budget posts.

Under the 2001 bill, Morocco will spend $ 4.08 billion (44.9 billion DH) in public investments. Some $ 3.83 billion

(42.2 billion DH) are earmarked to pay the debt and its services, the foreign debt payment soaking $ 1.35 billion (14.9 billion DH) of the amount.

Oualalou said Morocco will continue efforts to alleviate the foreign debt burden through improving management mechanisms. He added, in this connection, that the country's foreign debt will be reduced to $ 15.3 billion at the end of 2000 from $ 19 billion in the beginning of 1998.

The bill, based on an average cereal output in 2001 (6.7 million tons of cereals), forecasts an 8% growth. The budget deficit will be curbed to 3 % and inflation to 2.5 %, Oualalou said.
