Observers on the Sudanese borders
Sudan-Uganda, Politics, 10/24/2000
Sudanese minister of foreign affairs Abdul Rahman Numeiri on Monday announced that contacts are underway between Sudan and Uganda to send Egyptian and Libyan observers to monitor the moves of the rebels at the borders between the two countries.
Numeiri said that despite postponing Friday's meeting in Kampala on this issue, contacts are continuous between the two governments to send observers with the aim to prevent smuggling of ammunition and weapons from Uganda to the Sudanese rebellions.
In his context, Eritrea informed the leadership of the opposition Sudanese democratic national alliance -- convened in Asmara -- that "it is a partner and not a mediator in setting the Sudanese issue" and asked them "to prepare a mechanism for direct negotiations with Khartoum with no conditions."
Libya and Egypt have an initiative for reconciliation in Sudan between the central government and the rebellions.
