Sharm el-Sheikh Summit held under Egyptian conditions
Egypt, Politics, 10/21/2000
"The Sharm El-Sheikh Summit aimed at stopping the Palestinian bloodshed, lifting the siege imposed on Palestinian territory and getting the Israeli armed-to-the-teeth soldiers back to their barracks," said Osama Al-Baz, Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak's Political Advisor.
In an interview with "Good Morning Egypt" TV programme, Al-Baz said that there is no conflict between Sharm El-Sheikh summit and Saturday's Arab Summit, pointing out that Sharm el-Sheikh prepared for the Arab summit and removed obstacles before it by the calls for stopping the Israeli military operations and assaults against Al-Aqsa Mosque.
Al-Baz said the Summit was held under Egyptian conditions involving implementation of what was agreed upon before the international community, and that there should be an American reply if Israel fails to honour its agreements.
"President Mubarak and a number of Arab leaders have always been calling for keenness to meet on regular basis to discuss the challenges facing the nation, and not just the Arab-Israel conflict," said Baz.
Al-Baz said that Likud Party Leader Ariel Sharon's sacrilege of Al-Haram Al-Sharif with the aid of soldiers stirred a sedition between the Arabs and Israelis and even made things harder for both sides.
"The Israeli settlers "have lost their marbles" and practised their favourite hobbies in harming the Palestinians," said Baz calling for a halt for such "farces".
On the chances of peace expected, Baz expressed a belief that Israelis and Palestinians can not sit directly at the negotiating table amidst feelings of unrest, adding some time is needed to restore tranquility.
He pointed out that Palestinian Leader Yasser Arafat is still seeking the peace called for by President Mubarak, one that is just, comprehensive and balanced.
"The Arab front will always remain united even with those who refused to attend the Arab summit, but if we conducted an Arab public opinion poll, we would find out that 99% of the people are staunch supporters of the summit," said Al-Baz.
