Eritrea, Ethiopia to resume indirect negotiations in Algeria

Ethiopian diplomatic sources said on Friday that Ethiopia and Eritrea will resume indirect negotiations next Monday in Algiers under the auspices of Algeria and the African Unity Organization.

An Ethiopian official source asked not to be identified said that these negotiations constitute a new phase for reaching a complete peace plan following the signing of an agreement provides for halting acts of hostilities between the two countries on June 18 in Algiers.

For his part, a western diplomat asked not to be identified said that the objective of these negotiations is to resume contacts so as to reach a genuine peace negotiations that in line with the coming deployment of the UN mission in Eritrea and Ethiopia.

During their meeting in Lomy, in July, leaders of African unity organization member states asked Algeria to continue its efforts in order to establish peace in the African horn. The current indirect negotiations will be attended by the foreign ministers of the two countries and representatives for the African unity Organization.

Worthy mentioning that the Ethiopian- Eritrean conflict which resulted from border disputes ended in killing of tens of thousands mostly soldiers and the expulsion of 1.2 million persons.
