Andalucian government earmarks 1.5 billion pesetas to Moroccan projects
Morocco-Spain, Economics, 10/20/2000

The autonomous government of Andalucia, southern Spain, will earmark 1.5 billion pesetas (some 88.23 million DH) per year to development projects in northern Morocco during the 2001-2005 period.

The announcement was made by advisor to the presidency of the autonomous government Gaspar Zarrias Arevalo who is currently on a working visit to Morocco at the head of an andalucian delegation.

Arevalo told MAP after a meeting with director general of the agency for the development of the Moroccan northern provinces that cooperation between Morocco and the Andalucia government during the past four years was very positive. All the projects planned in the cooperation memorandum signed in 1996 were materialized with Andalucian investments exceeding 2.5 billion pesetas (147.05 million DH), he said.

Arevalo said the two sides have identified other fields of cooperation and will set up an innovative cooperation plan covering the 2001-2005 period. The plan, unique of its kind within the European Union, is a regional trans-border development plan conceived by the Moroccan and Andalucian governments, the Andalucian official said expressing hope that the plan will enjoy the EU's economic and financial backing.

The plan mainly seeks to promote private investments in industry and tourism and promote small and medium sized enterprises.

The plan was equally discussed at a meeting between Arevalo and Moroccan secretary of state for foreign affairs and cooperation, Taieb Fassi Fihri.

The meeting brought up the situation of the Moroccan community settled in Andalucia and the tragic xenophobe events it is subject to.

Arevalo also conferred with Moroccan minister of culture and communication, Mohamed Achaari, on cooperation in the audio-visual and cultural sectors. The two men stressed the need to hold periodical meetings between Moroccan and Andalucian journalists.
