Egypt sees balanced peace as basis of stability
Egypt, Politics, 10/19/2000

"Egypt believes that fair and balanced peace is the basis for political of economic stability in any volatile region in the world," said a Senior Diplomat.

"The latest bloody events in the occupied territories prove that there is no future for occupation regardless of its military might," said Egypt's Chief Delegate to the UN Ahmed Abul Gheit.

Abul Gheit noted that Egypt warned of the aggravation of the negative impact of the occupation and its repercussions especially when the occupant settles in the land and plucks out its original owners through a systematic policy.

This policy deprives the owners from utilizing their natural resources and improving their living conditions and even narrows the chances of the rising generations in education, jobs, progress and economic development.

Egypt's address at the UN Economic Committee debate criticized the Israeli perpetrations and settlements in the Palestinian territories.

Egypt urged the Israeli side to comply with the international legitimacy resolutions and to seriously seek end of the colonial practices in the occupied territories including Jerusalem and the Syrian Golan as far as the sovereignty of the original owners of these regions over their natural resources were concerned.

Egypt pointed out that it is not reasonable that the UN keeps its eyes closed regarding such blatant violations at a time voices are rising for the respect of human rights.

The general debate of the committee on Tuesday focused on the right of the Palestinian people and the people of the Golan Heights to maintain their permanent sovereignty over their natural resources.
