Signing of evacuation treaty October 19, 1954
Egypt, History, 10/19/2000

On October 19, 1954, President Nasser signed the Evacuation Treaty, which provided for the British Forces' evacuation from Egypt within 20 months. The Egyptian party was headed by President Nasser, while its British counterpart was headed by Anthony Nutting.

The treaty provided for some stipulations, among which came consultation and cooperation between the two states. It stated that in case of any armed aggression launched upon any country being a party to the joint defence treaty or upon Turkey, Egypt and the United Kingdom should immediately consult each other.

However, Britain subsequently conspired with France and Israel to launch a tripartite aggression on Egypt.

As a result, Egypt totally revoked the treaty on 1/1/1957, declaring that it was null and void as of October 31, 1956, when the tripartite agression actually began.
