Conclusion of the first phase of the Egyptian parliamentary elections
Egypt, Politics, 10/19/2000

The first phase of the parliamentary election operation concluded today its works in Egypt as the competition took place among more than 1000 candidates for 150 seats of the People's Assembly. The election is taking place under full judicial supervision to avoid any prejudice.

Violence which took place among the candidates' followers was very limited compared with the last election in 1995 which witnessed a lot of violence. The supervising committee responsible for ensuring security during the elections did not report any murder cases or weapons' usage.

The opposition and government candidates except the Muslim brothers candidates acknowledged that the elections are fair and that the judiciary is assuring the elections impartiality.

Meantime, the repercussions of Palestinian uprising and the frustration from the results of Sharm El-Sheik Sheik summit distracted the attention of the public from the parliamentary elections.
