ITU Secretary General in Morocco
Morocco, Economics, 10/18/2000
Secretary General of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), Yoshio Utsumi, is currently visiting Morocco for talks with Moroccan officials on preparations for the ITU conference of plenipotentiaries to be held in Marrakesh in 2002.
The union secretary general held separate meetings with secretary of state in charge of post and telecommunication and information technologies, Nasr Hajji, and with chief executive officer of the Moroccan company Maroc-Telecom, Abdeslam Ahizoun.
Utsumi, who started his four-day visit to Morocco Tuesday, told reporters the Marrakesh conference will debate obstacles hampering ITU action as well as the evolution of the telecommunication sector at the world level. His talks with Moroccan officials, he said, covered means of upgrading cooperation relations with the ITU
The conference to convene September 23 through October 18, 2002, will coincide with the last phase of the liberalization of the Moroccan telecom sector and may help Morocco promote the third telecom technologies generation, Nasr Hajji told MAP at the end of his meeting with the ITU chief. Morocco must seize the opportunity to showcase the development level reached by its telecom sector and to attract more foreign investments, he said.
Morocco will be the first Arab and the second African country to host the ITU conference of plenipotentiaries. Kenya hosted a similar conference in 1982.
ITU, set up in 1865, is headquartered in Geneva. It is an international organization within which governments and the private sector coordinate global telecom networks and services.
